Course Details

Our Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Certificate is designed to give you an understanding of the roles and responsibilities needed in jobs such as Teaching Assistant and Classroom Assistant.  You will be taught various aspects of supporting a teacher including delivery of curriculum, the importance of relationships, helping young people to develop self-esteem and independence.

Teacher support roles were few and far between many years ago but the significance of their role in the classroom has increased a great deal recently. You will now find the majority of schools view Support roles as having an imperative part to play in the classroom.

A teaching support role would involve you supporting both the teacher and pupils on a day to day basis. This could engage you in a variety of tasks such as general admin tasks, teaching small groups of children and even providing one-on-one support to children with learning difficulties.

Which area you choose to work in is entirely your choice. You can work with primary or secondary school pupils and can then narrow your choice down further if you wish to by specialising areas such as IT, literacy and numeracy.

The Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Certificate is the ideal way to kick-start a career in teaching. It’s not just about the challenges of realising children’s potential, it’s also about the rewards of seeing what your input has achieved in the classroom.

Qualifications

Throughout the course you will be required to complete 11 study units and keep a portfolio of evidence covering each of the study units to show you have gained a full understanding (mostly demonstrated by 50 work placement hours).

Upon successful completion of the course you will be presented with the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools NCFE Level 3 Certificate.

Our NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is an ideal course to help you progress onto the NVQ in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.  You may also go on to achieve the HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) standard.

NCFE is one of the fastest growing bodies in the United Kingdom.  Their qualifications are nationally recognised by the major qualification regulators:

• Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in England
• Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS) in Wales
• Council for the Curriculum Examinations & Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland

Study Plan

The course is designed to supply you with a thorough comprehension of the important skills needed in roles such as a Teaching Assistant or Classroom Assistant.   The course materials will cover a wide spectrum including the following subject matters:

• Prepare and maintain a safe learning environment
• Deal with emergencies, accidents and illness
• Understand the legislation relevant to health, safety and hygiene in schools
• Provide appropriate care and support to individual pupils and groups of pupils
• Support the safeguarding of children from abuse
• Support pupils' learning activities
• Promote and encourage appropriate pupil behaviour
• Understand the principles of inclusive education and support children with disabilities or special education needs
• Use ICT to support pupils' learning
• Support the development of learners’ literacy skills
• Support the development of learners’ numeracy skills

Study Details

The Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course has been designed in such a manner that your knowledge is built up in a logical order that allows you to learn at a pace to suit yourself.

Your study plan requires you to complete 11 study units.  As you progress through each of the 11 study units you will build up a portfolio of evidence to show all the learning outcomes are met for each unit.  Your portfolio will be used to assess your pass rate for the course. 

The Teaching Assistant course does not require you to have had any prior classroom or teaching experience.

Most students complete the course in approximately 300 hours of study and 50 hours in a work placement.

CRB Check (Criminal records Bureau)

As you can imagine, the Government legislation on child care and working with children is very stringent and various checks have to be undertaken.

Any person working with children in any capacity must undergo a CRB check which the school will usually request on your behalf.

If for some reason the school will not arrange the CRB check, you can submit a personal application on the website http://www.crb.homeoffice.gov.uk/.

Careers

A career as a Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant, Learning Support Worker or Special Needs Support Worker is on your doorstep once you have completed the course and been awarded the NCFE Level 3 Certificate.

Any of these roles undertaken within the primary and secondary school arena can expect to earn up to £20,000* per annum.
